The Solution

The health of our environment is not simply a recent issue. In fact, concerns with environmental pollution are documented in the writings of early human civilizations. As the abilities of scientific research improved over time, discoveries in the 19th century created theories of environmental health that are still valid today. However, despite the long-understood importance of our environment, only in the past few decades have we begun to see mainstream acceptance of the idea that human civilization is contributing to climate change, and could be unsustainable given the finiteness of many natural resources.

Modern environmentalism has been shaped since the conservation movement began at the turn of the 20th century. The Sierra Club, founded by John Muir in 1892 highlights a period of time when merely preserving land and natural resources was thought to be enough to ensure sufficient resources for generations to come. However, since the days of conservation and preservation, an increasing amount of scientific research has identified environmental issues that range from air pollution to extreme weather patterns, rising sea levels, and an overall threat to the availability of clean water and food for a growing human population.

However bleak the projections, the momentum building behind environmentalism. Countless individuals, groups, and organizations are putting sustainability and environmental protection in their list of priorities. If this trend continues, the creativity and resourcefulness that allowed for the advancement of human civilization could turn towards the solutions that can help clean up and preserve our environment
